I would dearly love to see Hillary Clinton rip Donald Trump
to shreds in Monday night’s debate. Must
we leave it all in the hands of Tim Kaine and Elizabeth Warren? Clinton will have a Super Bowl-esque platform
to lay waste to the man, her own “likeability” issues be damned. So since it needs to be done, I’ve written it
for her. Hillary, please memorize this
and unleash it at the appropriate time.
The format for the debate is as follows. The debate will be divided into six
time segments of approximately 15 minutes each on major topics selected by the
moderator, Lester Holt of NBC News. Holt
has selected three topics that each will be addressed in two of the 15-minute
segments: “America's
Direction,” “Achieving Prosperity” and “Securing America.”
Holt will
open each segment with a question, after which each candidate will have two
minutes to respond. Candidates will then have an opportunity to respond to each
other. The moderator will use the balance of the time in the segment for a “deeper”
discussion of the topic. It is here
where Trump – being unable to go deeper into any subject – will be most tempted
to lash into Clinton, with some sort of semi-controlled diatribe on the emails,
the Foundation, her judgment, that she is unfit for office.
And then I hope Clinton uses the next 120 seconds to say precisely
this (and I hope she adopts the tone of Jeff Daniels in his Will McAvoy “The Newsroom”
role, when he answered the question “Why is American the greatest country in
the world?”):
“I cannot
stand here and idly let this man pass judgment on my character and my fitness
for office.
This is a
man who calls women ‘fat pigs,’ ‘dogs’, ‘slobs’ and ‘disgusting animals.’
This is the
man who said that the journalist who reminded him that he had said all of these
things had been influenced by her menstrual cycle.
This is a
man who calls the Mexican immigrants who are desperate enough to leave their
home to seek a new life in America… “rapists.”
This is a
man who believes that a judge with Mexican lineage cannot serve in a case
involving a man – this man -- who is bigoted against Mexicans…what Republican
House Leader Paul Ryan calls “the textbook definition of racism.”
This is a man
who operated a ‘university’ that has the sole purpose of extracting money from
good Americans who believe his baseless claims that his courses will be their
salvation.
This is a man
has who has said that no members of an entire religion, the Islam faith, should
be allowed to enter our country, our land of religious liberty.
This is a
man who, in his real estate practices, denied housing to African-Americans
simply because they were black.
This is a
man who said he favors “stop and frisk” and racial profiling, practices that
have been deemed unconstitutional and are not worthy of America.
And this is
a man who believes that if you are captured in battle while putting your life
on the line for our country and the cause of freedom, you are not a hero.
This is a
man who raised money for his supposedly charitable foundation and then used
that money to pay for portraits of himself, and to buy off public officials.
This is a
man who lies the way people breathe…frequently, consistently and without
thought.
I could go
on and on. But let’s just say that I do
not believe in this man’s vision of America.
And I ask the American people to reject his vile, racist message of hate
and exclusion.
I believe
in a different America, the one we live in, the one in which, like Lady
Liberty, we welcome the tired and the poor.
We take all kinds, we love our neighbors, and we treat each other as we
wish to be treated. That is the America
I know, and while I too have my faults, demagoguery is not one of them, and
hate is not in my arsenal. I ask you, America,
to reject this man and reject what he stands for.”
If someone who knows Hillary will please pass this on, I would
be grateful.
